Where wine thinks outside the box. Some places do not simply submit to the unwritten laws of nature. Instead, they tell their own fascinating story. One such jewel lies hidden on Vienna's Bisamberg: the Ried Zwerchbreiteln. A true prime cut of Viennese viticulture.
While the rows of vines all around follow gravity almost reverently and hurry downhill in a straight line, this site has broken with the norm for centuries. Here the rows run „zwerch“, an almost forgotten Old High German word for crosswise. A historic rebellion against the monotony of the vineyard.
In the great wide world of wine, this vineyard would probably be respectfully called a clos. But where in France one thinks of cool stone walls, the Ried Zwerchbreiteln is embraced by pure life: a dense belt of wild, diverse vegetation surrounds the vines. Not cold stone, but pulsating life gives this place its very own, unique microcosm.
Here, where the wind breaks in the foliage and the vines catch the sun across the slope, not just wine is made. Here character matures, shaped by history and a living embrace of nature.

Shaped by crystalline rock, perfect physiological ripeness, fine fully ripe vineyard peach, juicy apricot, immediately appealing; extract sweetness, dense, matching acid structure, orange zest, stone fruit in fine expression, pure elegance and freshness, drinking pleasure at a high level.
Old vines on Viennese sandstone with crystalline inclusions are the basis for a special wine. The benefit of a deep-rooted system, paired with low yields, produces wonderful depth of extract, defined fruit notes and well-integrated acidity year after year.
